This scarf is named after Evelyn “Tudrok” Alexander, a lady with many accomplishments in life. She was born on the Minto Flats (Benhti) and grew up in Old Minto learning all of Benhti’s language, songs, and customs. This allowed her to become an accomplished song leader, who composed a wide range of songs. Evelyn made a few Memorial Potlatches (1*) , and many Memorial Potlatch songs.
Turdok was the first Woman to be elected to the Minto Village Council in the 1960’s, while also being the community midwife. The first time she helped deliver a baby was during the 1930’s in Old Minto, and her last was in 1980 at the New Minto village site. She was present for every birth in Minto for 50 years.
The color design of the beads and dentalium are from a Chief’s knife case that was gifted to Tudrok for making a Memorial Potlatch song in the 1980’s.
Evelyn made a Memorial Potlatch (1*) for her son Floyd in 1998 and had a beaded moose skin vest made to give away. The vest was made by Brenda Jimmie, the beaded flower design used on this scarf was created by her.
Having grown up in Old Minto, Turdrok had a unique way of teaching. She had a way of sharing her knowledge that the lesson would not be forgotten. Having this skill allowed Tudrok to share the language and customs she grew up learning, with those who asked.
Evelyn “Tudrok” Alexander was born on December 25th , 1916, off the Tanana River in Old Minto, and passed away on January 24th , 2009.
This scarf is 100 % silk, dry clean only. Do not machine wash!
1 * - A Memorial Potlatch is a three-day event to honor the memory of a passed loved one, with a special song made after the departed family member.
